Field Notes: Snowstorm in New York City
Back in January, I had planned on coming to New York City for a weekend since I was already working out of the Eastern Seaboard. Tickets and hotels all booked, I was pretty excited to come visit the Big Apple and see a few friends.
Apparently, so did Snowstorm Jonas.
Waking up Saturday morning at my hotel near Times Square, I could see that the roads are already covered in white fresh snow. So I decided to grab my Fuji camera with the 35mm lens attached to it, and go out to see the city in the storm.
Surprisingly, there were quite a bit of people outside playing in the snow. The stores were all closed of course, minus a few restaurants and cafes. But everybody who were out seems to be having fun with the inclement weather.

So I took the train to head over across the bay to checkout Williamsburg in Brooklyn. Most of the shops and restaurants were closed, but I came across a Jewish congregation that had just come out of a service in the local synagogue.
Seeing them dressed in black overcoats, I decided that I want to shoot in Black and White. Trying to capture that noir look that I've often seen New York City depicted in.
After nearly getting stuck in Brooklyn by hopping on the last train back to Manhattan, before Mayor de Blasio called for a shutdown of all above-ground train service, I woke up the next day to clear skies. The snow had stopped after laying over 2 ft on the ground.
Hooked up with some friends and we went out to Central Park. Felt like the whole city was there to play with the snow or to sled down a hill. The sky was really clear with the sun shining brightly.
Turned out to be a good weekend after all, despite the snowstorm.
